Sustainable App Cosmos

Living healthily, saving resources, taking care of the environment, and, naturally, also of our fellow humans.

Many people would like to do it all, but how? Doing good is becoming increasingly difficult as a result of the constant flood of possibilities in daily life. COMPANION introduces five apps that make mindful living easier.

Transparent Ingredients
What food to put in the shopping basket? Sometimes it’s not so easy, with there now being so many things to take into account if you want to eat sustainably, or if you suffer from food allergies. Those with no patience to trawl through food blogs and consumer forums can download the app Barcoo. The barcode scanner compares data on price-comparison sites and organic portals, checks test reports, and provides app users with information on pricing, ingredients, and ratings. It can also be used for products other than food.

Social Driving
The U-Bahn has stopped running, and one drink too many means going by bike or car is out of the question. Time to order a taxi with the Clever Shuttle app. This application ensures ecological, fun travel: Clever Shuttle pays fair wages, uses only electric vehicles, and advocates car-pooling. Meaning that other nice passengers can join you on your way home, which brings down the price for everyone.

Offtime = Metime
Those on a serious search for relaxation should use their smartphones to download the app Offtime, which has been developed to combat the phenomenon of permanent availability. This application puts the brakes on and blocks other apps, preventing phones from constantly pinging and push notifications from appearing on the screen. Using the simple settings, you can specify how you want to spend your time and who is allowed to get through despite the do-not-disturb mode. Finally, time for yourself — the world will have to wait!

Zero Waste Goal
Every restaurant and café has been there: Superfluous food ends up in the trash. Every year approximately one million tonnes of perishable food is thrown out. The concept of the app Too Good To Go is fighting food waste, providing consumers with a sustainable alternative to pizza delivery services. Food service providers post what’s left just before they close, and users of the app can reserve a dish before picking it up from their favorite restaurant. Leftovers with a difference!

Win-Win Situation
The kitchen is once again full of empty bottles, but there’s not enough time to take the burdensome recyclables back to the supermarket. Perhaps the bag is too heavy, or the queue at the recycling machine is too long. Watch this space! The app Pfandweg lets you advertise your empties, which will then be picked up free-of-charge from your home. This way you’re doing a favor for bottle collectors, who would otherwise be combing the streets, and simultaneously keeping your flat tidy.
