Konstantin Leitner, Vienna

Viennese artist Konstantin Leitner invites friends and guests to "Hüttengaudi" (Hut Fun). An arduous climb together with Sophie Nadler and Etienne Eisele to the K25 summit above the railway tracks is documented in photographs; now the homemade lark schnapps, brought from Styria, the artist's homeland, is shared with the guests under the hut roof made of cardboard and painted with wood paint.

The artistic roof under the roof of the hotel is a friendly takeover, an extended backdrop for a quirky expedition into the "Gaudi" holiday paradise on Langstrasse. The work "Hüttengaudi", created on site in the studio, thematises the expectation of a special experience. Made from found packaging cardboard, the hut roof fulfils its purpose for one evening, after which the backdrop is dismantled and disposed of, apart from the piece of roof purlins, which remains in the hotel's art collection as a holiday souvenir along with the empty schnapps bottle.

Matheline Marmy

Hailing from the world of photography, Geneva-based artist Matheline Marmy works with manipulable and reactive materials: metals, water, salts, acids, textiles, sunlight and bacteria - from which she creates objects and installations in combination with materials such as glass or plastic. She is also the co-editor of the ‘Exhibitions on Paper’ series of artist publications. Matheline Marmy was invited by Orlando Werffeli, the manager of the Zurich-based off space Lighthaus, to renew her contacts on the Zurich art scene across the Swiss-French/Swiss-German cultural divide as well as taking advantage of new networking opportunities.

In the studio Matheline Marmy tries out processing techniques. She solders brass mesh and copper to create experimental test pieces which hang on the concrete wall and become touching artworks in their archaic and expressive abstract materiality.

Marilyn Boror Bor
16 July to 7 August 2023

Marilyn Boror Bor is a Maya-Kaqchikel artist from Guatemala. The Zurich-based curator team Selina Fülscher and Wagner&Friends invited the artist and her partner, the graphic designer Jimena Pons, to Zurich.
The invocation of ancestors and the fruits of the earth are elements of ritual Maya culture and also feature in Marilyn Boror Bor’s contemporary artistic practice, in painting, printmaking, photography, installation and performance. Her works are projects focusing on self-empowerment, the analysis and preservation of the thinking and language of the indigenous Maya-Kaqchikel.

At the end of the hotel residency, Marilyn Boror Bor and Jimena Pons will present in the studio works and investigations which were produced during their stay, including a ‘chocolate’ creation with cacao beans from Guatemala, cast in Swiss cement. Guests in the studio are invited to light a candle and add it to the ritual circle made up of cacao beans, yarn, flower petals, spirits and candles to commemorate the deceased, ancestors and the cycle of nature.

Natalia Zourabova
25. June to 6. July 2023

The Israeli artist Natalia Zourabova was invited by the Zurich-based artist Maria Pomiansky to roam through her beloved Zurich, drawing together.
The artists draw everywhere - they always have felt tips and paper to hand - whether it’s at the hotel, at the lido or on a trip to the nearby mountains. At the end of the residence, Natalia Zourabova and Maria Pomiansky will put a selection of the drawings and paintings which they created in Zurich on display in the studio.

Both painters are active members of the successful Israeli female artist group New Barbizon, which was established in Tel Aviv ten years ago. The New Barbizon painters were all born in the former Soviet Union and emigrated to Israel when they were young, which is where their paths crossed. New Barbizon is bringing the painter’s studio back into the public sphere and everyday life. The artists paint day-to-day life, friends, family, streets and scenes in the studio or on doorsteps in Tel Aviv, Haifa or Zurich.

Selina Trepp

Selina Trepp welcomes hotel guests and art enthusiasts to the Guest Studio on the ground floor. The artist will present a small exhibition, straight out of her suitcase: paintings, drawings and stop-motion video animation, all created in her studio in Chicago. Selina Trepp, on the invitation of Esther Eppstein, artist and curator of the 25hours Guest Studio, is in Zurich for an artist talk at the Message Salon and the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst.

Born in Zurich, Selina Trepp lives and works in Chicago, USA. Her works are exhibited in museums, at art venues and in public spaces across the US. She sings and plays the videolah in Spectralina, the audio/video project with her husband, the musician and producer Dan Bitney, and also performs live gigs with musicians such as Tomeka Reid and Caroline Davis at international festivals, clubs and art galleries.

The diplomat case represents the microdiplomacy of “Embassy of Microterritories” in material form. The case opens; handmade filigree objects made from materials that have been found, plant parts and waste serve as a starting point for conversations. Natalia Peredvigina and Kirill Agafonov question observers about their personal territories and inner compass. “Embassy of Microterritories” encourages bilateral negotiations and interviews in the office; artworks, conversations, networks are created.

Pauline Beaudemont

Pauline Beaudemont’s surrealist, feminist, rebellious and poetic installations, drawings, sculptures, texts and artworks drift between therealms of dream and fantasy. The French artist manages the Parisian artist-run space Artemis Fontana, which she founded herself. At the hotel studio in Zürich, she creates new collages and drawings, as well as the “Temps Calmes” photograph series – the black-and-white film photographs show friends from Zürich enjoying some peace and relaxing. Kinga Toth

Kinga Toth, the Hungarian linguist, artist and poet, uses her performances to combine poetry and music with elements of visualart. Her texts incorporate biographical, feminist and socio-ecological themes. Kinga Toth has published numerous poetry collections in multiple languages. At the hotel studio the poet writes new poems on an old typewriter; collages and the slim book of poetry “szendvics/beim sandwich” are created using fragments of text and materials found in the hotel.

Irina Kurtishvili

Irina Kurtishvili, the artist and curator, was born in Tbilisi in the former soviet republic of Georgia; she now lives and works in Cologne and Tbilisi. Irina Kurtishvili is behind numerous exhibitions, publications and artistic initiatives in both Germany and Georgia, which focus on architecture, art and film in Georgia. At the hotel studio, the artist prepares for her lecture “Caucasus – a Reference Archive”, on 18th May at the Kunsthalle Zürich.

Ed Young
12. August to 8. September 2019

South African artist Ed Young has risen to fame with his provocative and socio-critical interventions in galleries and art institutions, and as co-manager of a project room in his home city of Cape Town. Ed Young plays with the role of the artist as the jester, entertainer and admonisher, and provokes viewers with works which critically mirror society and the art industry with subversive humour.

Eva Vuillemin

Born in Zurich, Eva Vuillemin lives and works in Berlin. The artist works with performance, video and analogue photography. Eva Vuillemin was commissioned by the 25hours Hotel Langstrasse to carry out an exclusive photographic project. During her stay in Zurich, the artist roamed the Langstrasse district with her camera and the familiar yet also distanced view of someone who hasn’t lived there for quite some time. Back in Berlin, a subjective and personal homage to Langstrasse emerged from her studio and photographic laboratory.

Gorod Ustinov

The micro-artist group Gorod Ustinov from Izhevsk, Russia has been working on a long-term research project, “Museum.Delivery”, to explore the possibilities that a museum offers in terms of facilitating both participation and the exchange of ideas. “Museum.Delivery” is an art service: Gorod Ustinov provides and creates museums wherever they are needed. Interested parties were able to visit Gorod Ustinov at the hotel studio on the ground floor near the bar, or alternatively, the group could be contacted via email (in English) at gorodustinov@gmail.com.

Davix
16. to 28. April 2019

The Lucerne-born musician and painter Davix moved into the hotel studio with his drum kit and a case of pictures. Through of a meticulous selection process, the artist chose which artworks would be exhibited at the “Die Diele” art space, an art display window in the Langstrasse district. Every day, Davix would sit at his drum kit and drum against the rhythm of the trains which clattered past on the tracks opposite the studio’s window.

Stini Arn
30. March to 15. April 2019 

Born in Switzerland, artist and musician Stini Arn lives and works in Bamako, the capital of Mali in West Africa. Stini Arn has not only been following sounds across the world for many years, but also the history of textiles, in particular weaving. In Bamako, the artist built a loom and has revived forgotten traditional techniques and patterns alongside local weavers. The artist also opened the Atelier Yiriba in Bamako, an open space for local children to be creative. Stini Arn and Dramane Mallé opened the hotel studio to friends, enthusiasts and hotel guests on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 April from 4pm.

Sergio Rojas Chaves
1. to 14. October 2018 

Sergio Rojas Chaves, born in Venezuela, lives and works in San José, Costa Rica. Sergio Rojas Chaves’ performances, collages, artworks and photographs explore the relationship between humanity and nature. By invitation of Réunion Zurich, Sergio Roja Chaves spent his residency at the hotel studio creating an installation for the window display of the “Die Diele” art space and planning a performance to be staged during the opening.

Mark Divo
23. August to 3. September 2018

The Zurich-raised artist and curator Mark Divo has gained fame beyond the city limits as an initiator of a wide range of ‘cultural occupations’. His career highlight took place in 2002 with the takeover of the historic Cabaret Voltaire on Spiegelgasse in Zurich. Ever since, Mark Divo has worked to revive the Dadaist tradition in Zurich with his many Dada festivals. Mark Divo set up a temporary shop in the hotel studio that carried art and the latest collection from his fashion art label “Gangster Hippie Fashion”. All visitors welcome!

Anna Lukashevsky

Anna Lukashevsky was born in Vilnius, Lithuania and lives and works in Haifa and Tel Aviv, Israel. The artist is a member of the New Barbizon painters’ collective. New Barbizon is bringing figurative painting back to contemporary art, into our everyday lives and onto the streets. In Zurich, the artist took to the streets with her sketchbook in hand. At the hotel studio, the painter worked with oil and acrylic paints on canvas.

Chloe Feinberg

The British-American artist Chloe Feinberg’s media include drawings, animations, videography and paintings. The art book publisher Innen presented the new publication “Chloe Feinberg: Hermetica” at the publishing house’s premises in Zurich with an exhibition featuring the large-scale images she created during her residency at the hotel studio.

Louis M. Schmidt

The American artist and publicist Louis M. Schmidt, who is based in L.A., sketches his (introspective) observations wherever he goes. The artist used the hotel studio as a starting point for his tours of the streets and creative spaces of the city. Louis M. Schmidt produces small editions of zines (printed booklets) that he shares with people in a global self-publishing network.

Oliver Ross
18. May to 6. June 2018

The artist Oliver Ross, who lives in Hamburg, is the founder and sole member of Rossology, which has a manifesto that the artist wrote in 2013. His works include paintings, text and multimedia installations. During his residency at the hotel studio, Oliver Ross produced luminous objects, drawings and collages made from a range of materials, including recovered materials. At the end of his residency, the artist invited visitors to view his exhibition in the hotel studio.
After completing his residency in the studio at the 25hours Hotel Langstrasse, Oliver Ross explained the extent to which a change of workplace affected his creative process and whether art and hotels can function well together. Read more here.

Rich Bott

The American artist and filmmaker Rich Bott formed the artistic duo Animal Charm in 1995 alongside Jim Fetterley. The duo have become pioneers in video footage collages and are still active in Los Angeles. At the end of his residency, Rich Bott presented a small exhibition at the studio featuring drawings, finds and a publication created during his residency at the hotel on Langstrasse. 

At the opening event, Rich Bott showed a music video “Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti”, made by Animal Charm and Ariel Pink in 2011, on the hotel TV in suite 724, followed by a discussion about VHS video art and American media and pop culture involving the artist and Zurich-based film expert Marcy Goldberg.

Lukatoyboy
24. April to 21. May 2017

The Belgrade-born artist Lukatoyboy, who is based in Berlin, kicked off the Artist Residency Programme at the newly-opened 25hours Hotel Langstrasse. At the studio’s welcome party, Lukatoyboy gave a live rendition of a PlayStation sound composition, and the Tel Aviv underground lo-fi musician Ryskinder played his first concert in Switzerland. The publication “Hotel Confidential” was released at the end of Lukatoyboy’s residency. On his many trips, the artist rifled through the computers in hotel lobbies, including those at the 25hours Hotel Langstrasse, for any documents left behind. At the opening event, Lukatoyboy played a DJ set using tapes in the Audiotape Lounge on the first floor of the hotel.

Veli&Amos
Art at the hotel

Veli Silver (Slovenia) and Amos Angeles (Switzerland) met on the streets of Bucharest in 2008. The two artists have been working in Zurich under the name Veli&Amos since 2010. Veli&Amos’ multimedia art brings together painting, video, music and performance. Veli&Amos produce video clips and pop songs, appeal for participation in their long-term project “Let’s save the whales international”, spray canvases not only with aerosols but also with prepared fire extinguishers, and take centre stage as the protagonists and main characters of their media productions. With their film Style Wars 2 (2013), a humorous contemporary homage to the legendary cult film “Style Wars” about the early New York graffiti scene in the 1970s, the duo toured international creative spaces and film festivals in Germany, Russia, Israel and the United States amongst others, following a successful premiere in Zurich.
